


ABOUT JOE ALTER
Joe Alter has dedicated over 40 years to the field of contemporary dance as a dancer, choreographer, and educator. He earned his Master of Fine Arts in choreography and dance technology from The Ohio State University. As the artistic director of the Joe Alter Dance Group, his works have been presented at venues including The Kitchen, The Sylvia and Danny Kaye Playhouse, and the 92nd Street Y in New York City, as well as throughout California, Texas, New Mexico, and internationally in Mexico, Colombia, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Serbia. In partnership with international collaborators, he developed the Polish Project, exploring the creative process with underserved youth in Poland.
Mr. Alter has created over 50 works, presented in spaces ranging from black box theaters to opera houses, including commissioned pieces such as The End is the Beginning and Skin Hunger: Part II for Lux Boreal Compañía de Danza in Tijuana; Everything Slips Away for PWST in Kraków; and Passing Through, a site-specific work for Trolley Dances San Diego. His commission If/Then premiered in November 2019 at the International Meeting of Dance Theater in Lublin, Poland, and was subsequently selected for the Polish Dance Platform tour. In July 2021, he premiered Skin Hunger in WrocÅ‚aw, a work now in the permanent repertoire of Teatr Polski WrocÅ‚aw, which received funding for a U.S. tour in spring 2023.
Skin Hunger Part II, performed by Lux Boreal Compañía de Danza, premiered at CEART in Tijuana in 2023 and toured extensively, with performances at the XXIV Muestra Internacional de Danza Tijuana "Cuerpos en Tránsito" at CECUT, the 43rd International Contemporary Dance Festival "Lila López" in San Luis Potosí, SDSU's Prebys Theatre in San Diego (November 17–18, 2023), and additional dates in Ensenada and Tecate, Mexico.
